I laughed. "I know I promise, huh Promise and I can keep one." I tugged on the filly's lead hoping she would follow me to the pasture. When we got there I opened the gate and turned her out. Then I leaned on the fence wondering what Belle would think of her knew pasture buddy.
"Hi there. You must be the new horse. Would you like to race me? I think I've seen you before..maybe at the racetrack? My name is Southern Belle. Belle for short. What's yours?" I tossed my head eager to run with the knew horse. A sorrel filly who looked about two years old. "Your more than likely going to replace me when I'm retired from racing but you'll still race. That's Stevie over there on the fence and in the pasture to the left of us is Dancer's pasture. She's pregnat you know. It well be fun to have a little foal next door don't you agree? And the pasture to the right of us is Juliet's. Sometimes she's turned out with us but other times not. If we sleep out here tonight I'll go and show you the boys. Oh did I mention that Dancer is pregnat to Lightning. I think he's just like you. Always wanting to run. Yeah I can tell that about you. Well how about that race?'' I knew that I had talked too much but I couldn't help it. The new horse was here!

She stared at the mare that called herself Belle. She was excited to meet another equine that was a racehorse. Oh I'd love to race you! She nickered excitedly. She listened as the mare introduced herself Its nice to meet you Belle. I'm Able Promise, Promise for short She continued to listen as the equine explained who her new owner was and the equine that resided here. She flicked an ear as the mare mentioned the race again. Of course! I never give up a chance to run She said flicking her ear.

I reared and lunged forward. "Try to keep up!" I called behind me. It felt wonderful to run with another racehorse, especially a new one. I could see how good this youngster was. I let out a joyful whinney and streached out more. Then I waited a little. There was no rush. The wind was challenging me, calling my name and I was going to win.
I laughed as the Belle took off. "See if you can stay with her Promise!" I called to the sorrel filly. "Have fun you two I'm going to see Dancer." I don't think they even noticed, after all they were both having fun.

The filly did not rear like the older mare did, instead she immediatly went into a gallop No need to worry about me lagging behind! She nickered as she stretched out, she was only a few lengths behind, but somehow she always managed to catch up and overthrow the leading horse in the end. She felt the wind in her mane and it made her want to run even faster. She could hear her hooves beating down on the earth, oh how she loved to run

"I didn't think so!", I tossed my head and rounded the pasture not giving the filly much of a chance to catch up. "Catch me if you can!" I loved the pounding of hooves and the feeling of the wind in my mane and my tail streaming behind me. Lightning heard us and he let out his challenging scream. I could hear him pounding around in his pasture too. "Hey I think Lightning is about to join us!" I called to Promise. The pounding in Lightning's pasture stopped and I could hear his hooves coming closer.
Secret Lightning "Hey guys! Where ever there's a race, there's a Lightning!", I called to the two running mares. I couldn't help jumping the paddock fence, I needed to run to race! I jumped that fence and quickly over took both of the mares. I was about a length or two in front of Belle. "Come on slow pokes, let's go!" I had seen the new horse and new that she wanted a good run and I would give her that run she wanted.

Promise nickered as she noticed the other equine jump the fence. She was still excited that she was able to run against the other horses. The thrill of a good run was unmatched! She threw up her head as she fought to pass the running horses, they sure were fast. She figured they had been running and racing much longer than her. After all she hadn't raced in awhile she was a bit rusty on her skills, but she knew better to keep running and never stop. Soon enough she gradually slowed down to a trot then to a walk then a halt. Her nostrils were flared as she took caught her breath. She nickered to the other horses once more That was exciting!

"Can't beat me that easy, Lightning!" I shouted to the colts who was beating me about a lenghth. I surged foreward and saw Promise dropping back. I guess she wasn't fit enough or maybe she just had enough. I felt my stride lengthening and hooves digging deeper into the grass as I tried to catch Lightning. I caught him but just bareily as we were making the final turn into our 'homestrech'.
The homestrech! I got excited. I was gonna win! I was, oh yes I was! Belle thought she had me beat but no I wasn't out of speed yet! I was never out of speed! I was a well that you could keep on drawing from! The well of speed. I wasn't even reaching half speed yet but hey this was only a race with ole slowpoke Belle. I went faster incresing my speed beating Belle by three lenghths or even more! I slowed down and went to Promise. "Hey why did you stop? Oh and how many times have you raced? I've raced twice because my Stevie doen't want to race me too much before I'm three." I looked at the new filly. She was pretty and my age too...but I had Dancer but she was pretty....

The filly watched as the pair of horses continued to race against each other. She truly disliked seeing other horses ahead of her but she had to face the truth, she was out of shape. She shook her head as she continued to observe the other equines running then flicked her ear as the equine named Lightning approached her "I've only been to two races much like yourself She responded. Her lack of racing was mainly because she changed owners and her previous owner tried to train her in jumping, but she didn't take a liking to jumping over things.

"Oh then why couldn't you keep up? Did you win your first two races? I did. Won them by a couple of lenghths too. It was fun! Don't you just love to run?!" I asked excitedly. I just couldn't wait till my next race! I hoped there was some horse who could challenge me!
"Please excuse Lightning. I've only raced about twelve times this year but could have raced more if I wasn't injured in a flash fire. Yeah, I really wish i could race more but oh well I helped Stevie find Chris in the fire and I'm happy about that." I said calmly. "Oh Ligthning you better go Stevie's gonna notice you soon." I added. "You run pretty good Promise just need a little more stamina. How long has it been since you first race?" I asked the filly. It had been about a month since mine and I sure missed the track but I was going to probably retire to a broodmare next year after the racing season was over. I would be five then and that would be good enough for me. Just to settle down and have some foals.

Promise snorted at Lightning's statement I've won both of my two starts She said simply. Indeed she did love to run, but she seemed to have lacked some of the experience that made her so great so many months before.
Promise looked to Belle as she spoke I think the early part of last winter She responded. It had been a long time since she had last ran on the track, she missed the track. She snorted again, she still remembered being trained to showjump. Bah, jumping wasn't going to cut it. It was nothing like running mile long races and passing the slower horses. The slow horses always get run over. She flicked an ear, did she look like a high class fancy prancy arena horse? Nope.
