2 Year Old Sorrel Thoroughbred Filly..... Disciplined In Racing and Eventing..... Am I able to keep a promise? A somewhat large goosneck horse trailer backed up to the establishment, the smell of horses and dust was strong in this place. A handful of large, sleek and muscular Thoroughbreds were inside the trailer, and they were all making a racket, snorting, and pawing and such. Many had never been in a trailer before, for most of them were only yearlings. There was a two year old in there too, along with her dam who was nearly making ten years of age. It was this years crop of Thoroughbreds, some were bred and raised from the farm others came from a place up north. A small gray muzzle peered out of the side of the trailer were an opening resides. Brown eyes gazed restlessly upon the scene, trying to figure why anything was happening. Her legs ached from standing too long and the younger horses were kicking and screaming as if they were dying. The filly looked over and saw her dam peering out of the trailer as well, she was surprised to have met her mother again after she was weaned. But her mother was wanted by the people who had owned her just recently, the people who were selling her at this auction. The filly snorted as dust rose into her nostrils as the trailer finally came to an abrupt stop. She pulled on her lead slightly as the light streamed in from someone opening the trailer gate. She watched calmly as someone led the other yearling horses off, she snorted again, she realized that those horses were already sold as soon as they got off the trailer. They were descendants of multmillionaire dollar sires and dams. She herself, she had good breeding yes, but not as good as them. Her sire was a winning racing sire, but most of his fame came from the winnings of his foals, her sire was retired long ago and he only won races for about two years, in his early age. Her dam, on the other hand, raced for a very long time. She never won a race but she seemed to always get third place somehow, how strange. The filly watched her mother be led off of the trailer without once looking back at her little red filly. The filly threw up her head as her lead was untied and her hooves made noise as she jumped off the trailer, almost ungracefully. She was lucky that the owner was going to put her in a sale paddock so that she can run and stretch her legs. Maybe he wanted to show off her speed? She didn't know but she was excited as she pranced behind the man as he opened the gate to the paddock. Before he removed her halter and lead however, he placed a board on the gate fence that said:

She peered at the paper throughout the corner of her honey brown eyes as the man finally released her from the halter and lead and into the paddock. He closed the gate and watched the filly for a few more moments and then walked away without a second glance. The filly turned around and looked at the human walking away, she eyed him for a few more long, enduring seconds and then with a squeal she turned on her haunches and tore across the field, her hooves kicking up bits of earth. She stretched out her neck as was able to stretch out her aching legs that had been standing still for hours on end. She whinnied loudly to seemingly no one as she continued her mad run across the paddock and she turned a sharp corner as it wasn't even there. It felt good for her to run again, she had no run in ages! She skidded to an abrupt stop in the middle of the field. What would happen next? Would she reside here for the rest of her life, or would someone else come and give her a new fate? She did not know and her nostrils flared as her lungs brought in air. After a few more moments she kicked up her heels and started a new run across the field. I think I can. I know I can. I have what it takes to keep a promise. For Sale For: 1200$

I walked slowly around the sales paddocks. This was the place where I would find my new horse. Not that I really needed a new horse, having three already with a foal on the way. Could I really handle five horses? I would have to get a bigger trailer, one that held six. The one I had now only held four horses which was fine till now that is. More vet bills, more mouths to feed, especially because I planed on keeping the foal. Hmm I knew I needed to get another racehorse. I was seriously considering retiring Belle from racing, after all she was four a good age for her to stop racing. Well maybe one more year then I would start training her for Westurn pleasure. I took in a deep breath and sighed. It seemed so long ago that I had met the troubled two year old. Now it was time to find some other two year old that needed a home. A brown colt stood at a paddock gate. He sure was a good looking colt but I knew that I couldn't handle two rumbuntious two year old colts. Lightning was a ready a handful. Not that I didn't love the little flirt anyway. I needed to get a filly for sure. I smiled. Yeah I could handle a spunky two year old filly. I laughed to myself. Yeah another filly around the barn is just what we needed. Well that is if I found the right one. Then I saw a sorrel filly being turned out into one of the sales paddocks. She was very excited, like she was about to enter a starting gate to a race. This filly was obviously a Thoroughbreed, it showed immediatly. She definatly was a racer I could tell but maybe she was also disciplined in something else? I walked over to the gate and watched the filly. As soon as the groom was gone she squealed and tore accross the field. I laughed and watched the filly with curious eyes. This filly obviously has running on the brain. She really seemed like Lightning, running until he could run no more. I looked at the nameplate as the filly stopped running.

Able Promise? Now why did that sound familar. Oh yeah! I had seen the filly race at one of the tracks I was at. That filly was a fine runner. Won two races already. Now that was a good horse. She didn't come from any amazing bloodlines but none of my horse's really did. I liked taking the unlikly and turning them into champs. "Promise! Come here girl!", I said loudly to the sorrel filly. Then I let out a sharp whistle that I used to call all my horses. Hmm, maybe I would buy Promise after all.

ABLE PROMISE No feat is to great, All you have to do is overcome Show them that you are the best I'm able to keep a promise She had lowered her head to graze for a few moments, but her red frame was still poised to keep running. She raised her head, grass still hanging out of her mouth, as he ears flick when she heard her name being called. She chewed on the grass slowly for a few moments before galloping over to the fence, just barely coming to a halt as she approached it. Her ears were pricked at this new person. She didn't recongnize this person, not at all. She stretched out her neck and sniffed her for a few moments, then nickered abruptly. There was a look in her eyes and the way she stood that was asking Will you race me? And then the look was almost pleading. Perhaps this human wanted her to show how fast she could run. Promise missed the track! She wanted to race other horses, to be number one! She turned around slightly and ran to the other side of the paddock and back, her nostrils flared as she danced from hoof to hoof. Race me! She thought but she knew that a human could never keep up with her. She flicked an ear at this realization and lowered her head. Bummer

I laughed and climbed over the fence. "You wanna race don't cha? Well I'm gonna take you home and tun you out in the pasture with Belle. Then you two can race but how about a game of tag?'' I tapped the mare firmly on the rump and took off running. All my horses loved to run and so did I. We had a need for speed. I waited for the filly to come and try to catch me.

She watched as the human ran off ahead of her. She never liked to be behind anyone! She whinnied shrilly before galloping after the human. She wasn't going to fall behind a human in a race! She stretched out her slender red legs and she managed to get a better hold on the earth beneath her hooves and she stretched out her neck as she eventually ran ahead of the human. She slowed up to a canter and looked back, still cantering, and nickered. She soon trotted back and waited patiently, cocking a hoof in the process then yawning.

"I see you don't like to be left behind." I giggled. The horse didn't understand the game but maybe she would the second time. I ran up to the mare. "Tag your it!" I wondered if the filly would get it this time around. I laughed and ran to the gate. "Come on girl. Have a little fun!" I called to Promise. I wanted to let the horse strech her legs a little before I put her in another trailer. Besides there was no rush. I didn't really have anything to do any way.

ABLE PROMISE No feat is to great, All you have to do is overcome Show them that you are the best I'm able to keep a promise She flicked her ears, confused. For a moment she was a bit unsettled as she flicked her tail across her flanks. She threw up her head as the human ran at her, what was the human saying? She flicked her ears again then she galloped after the human again this time she stretched out her neck and nudged the human in the back then skidded to a stop in front of the gate. She swung her head around to look behind her and nickered as if saying Tag!

"Now you get it don't you Promise. Well get back here you little rascal!" I ran toward the mare again trying to tag her. I was breathing hard but I managed to give her a light tap on the rump. "Tag! Last time." I ran again toward the gate and laughed waiting to the sorrel filly to tag me. I saw a groom approaching but I didn't care much Promise and I were having too much fun.

Her eyes flickered to the groom that was walking by, but her ears were concentrating on somewhere else. She flicked an ear as she saw another human approaching, her owner, or her past owner, or better yet the person who was selling her. She tilted her head as the human leaned on the gate watching the filly intently. Promise snorted then nudged the girl with her nose before trotting to the end of the fence line. She snorted than laid down in the grass and rolled. The lush grasses felt nice on her red coat. Soon she stopped rolling and raised her head and yawned.

I laughed one more time and saw another person approaching. This must be Promise's old owner. I started to talk to the owner. When we were done I grabbed Promise's lead shank and clipped it to her halter. "Come on girl let's go home. I'm Stevie your new owner and with me you'll race till your old enough to retire. I won't sell you if I can help it. Your going to love your new home I just know it." I tugged gently on the lead rope and took a step toward the open gate.

She understood the words 'owner' and 'race' She guessed that this one was going to race her. How exciting! She felt her lead being pulled and since she was quite calm for a racehorse, she followed behind her new owner, quite happily.

"Good girl. Your definatly not completely like Lightning. He's my stud horse but you might not met him for a while. You will meet Belle my other female racehorse. Maybe even Dancer but you won't be turned out with her because she has a foal on the way. Then there's Juliet, she's the boss's horse. Oh and there's Omaha and Rebel. Omaha is Belle's little friend. You might meet him but not Rebel since he's a stallion." I laughed. I knew the horse probably didn't understand but it was fun talking to her anyway. "Well here's the trailer and you gotta go in. Come on up the ramp." I encourged Promise to get in the trailer. I didn't think she would spook at it but you never knew.

ABLE PROMISE No feat is to great, All you have to do is overcome Show them that you are the best I'm able to keep a promise Promise flicked her ears as she listened to the girl talk. She didn't understand the words she was saying now, so she stopped paying attention after the first three words. She understood the word trailer as she gazed at the trailer before calmly walking in. She hoped she didn't have to stay in the trailer long, the metal crates always bored her and there was hardly any room to walk.

"It won't be long girl don't worry." I knew that the horses hated to be in a cramped trailer. I got in the truck and started the engine. Here we go another horse is coming home! About 30 min. later we arrived on Evergreen Ranch. Good finally I could get Promise out. I quickly grabbed the lead rope that I had thrown in the back of the truck and strode to the back of the trailer. "Alright girl here it if your new home." I opened up the trailer door and clipped the lead to her halter. I heard the other horse's pounding in their pastures and whinnying smelling the new horse. I let out my shrill whistle letting them know that I was coming soon. I backed Promise out of the trailer and onto the ground. "Take a good look girl because this will be home until I can find a ranch of my own." I looked around myself breathing in the pine scented air.

The red filly was getting slightly irritated on the way to her new home but she nickered loudly as she was led out of the trailer. She danced from hoof to hoof again, more excited to be out of the trailer than being at her new home. She let out another shrill whinny and pulled on her lead. Her nostrils flared as she caught the scent of the other equine but she wasn't particulary interested in equine at the moment. She nickered again as she swung her head and looked at her new owner
