The sun beat violently down upon her painted pelt. It shone brightly from her ebony drops and absorbed by her ivory splashes. The rays highlighted the lighter pink scars that marred her beautiful coat. Her audits flickered like radars, listening for the footfalls of others that belonged to her species. She did not want them to be near her, she wanted to be able to flee as soon as one came into view. Her whipcord flickered and lashed out at a fly that had landed upon her rump. She flinches when she heard the crunch of bristles and then emitted a deep sigh when she saw it was just a bird emerging from the tall grass. Her dark oracles flickered restlessly around her and she took a few hesitant steps forward. She realized that there was nothing else around, so dear Alma was now able to do some grazing. The Arabian, American paint cross was severely underweight, her ribs showing just. The painted beauty shook out her banner and dropped her dome to pull violently at the emerald stalks. Her oracles never stayed in one place for long, the ears, pinned upon the top of her cranium, slowly swiveled to take in all sounds. Again, her frame was rocked with a flinch when she heard another sound. No bird emerged this time, it seemed to be far off. She pulled up her head slowly, looking around nervously. Nothing came into view, but she knew that she should leave. She was too hungry though, her ivories were drawn to the chewy grass that tasted so good assaulting her taste buds. A cold shiver ran down her spine, as if it was trying to warn her that something was going to happen and happen soon.

Jason had taken a slight detour from the small town, he wanted to get a good ride in for his gelding, he knew the gelding probably wanted to stretch his legs after the long trip from Texas. He drove his truck until he found somewhere he could park it without getting hit by another vehicle and his trailer wouldn't be in the way either. He got out of the truck and closed the door, locking up every thing. He rummaged around the small tackroom in his trailer until he found the appropiate tack for Cal. He set it down on the ground and went around the back of the trailer and opened the gate. Cal's big brown head peered at Jason as he opened the gate. "Hey big fella" said Jason as he stepped into the trailer and patted the gelding's face. "We're going for a ride, not too long though. We have to find somewhere to get settled in for the night" I slowly led the gelding out of the trailer and tied him to the side of the trailer. I easily tacked him up, mainly because even Cal wanted to go somewhere and he usually didn't make a fuss about being tacked up. I closed the trailer gate and the tack room door and patted Cal one more time before I climbed into the saddle. I tugged on his rein slightly as I led him into the slightly wooded area. I gave Cal the rein and let him venture out into a leisurely trot into the woods, I knew he wouldn't get carried away, he needed the excercise and I needed the excitement of a good ride.

Her head ripped up in fear as she head the approaching sound of hooves. Her frame automatically took off, little did she know that she was going in the wrong direction. She was heading toward to the thing she wanted to avoid, and she wouldn't know until too late. The trouble with Alma when she grew scared, she acted upon impulse and not with intelligence. The mare's well defined Arabian pillars shot herself into the thick coverage of the surrounding forestry. Her audits were flattened against her neck, her nares flared in fear. Her banner and whipcord flew out behind her, thrown back into a messy array of matted locks. Leaves and mud threaded through her ebony strings. Dirt plastered her coat. Of course she wasn't to be clean, she was a feral mare who had not been in human contact for three years. Well, she had been with humans for two of those three, but she did not think of them as humans. She thought of them as savages. Beasts who had not learned how to live properly. A snort left her at that thought, her black oracles widening with fear when the thing she dreaded came into view. She could not stop instantaneously as she was going too fast. She could not turn around as trees had enclosed her in a narrow path. The mare began to skid to a halt, eventually stopping just a ways away from the human upon his equine companion. The mare threw her front end into a rear, her orbs rolling back into her head and a shrieking whinny ripping through her jaws. She kicked out her front legs, narrowly missing the geldings muzzle. She dropped herself heavily down onto all fours, still un able to turn around, and backed up as quickly as possible. The mare was then forced to stop as her rump hit a tree. She gave another whinny of pure fear and kept her aghast orbs upon the human. She was cornered, and her only way to escape is to injure, something she did not want to do, even if it had happened to herself. Her hind leg struck out at the tree behind her, getting her hoof stuck in a groove indented in the tree trunk. A shriek of pain left her, her leg tugging violently at the tree. Pain assaulted her skinny structure, agony shot through her. She could not free her leg, she was now hopeless.

As Cal gingerely walked his own path with Jason in the saddle, Jason looked up as he heard the hoofbeats of another horse but when he really realized it , it was a bit too late. A painted mare seemed to come out of no where as she trampled her way in front of the brown gelding, almost hitting the gelding in the face with one of her hardened hooves. Jason remained calm throughout the situation, however he was still surprised, he pulled back on the reins a little seeing as his horse was a bit surpried himself. He watched in awe as the frightened mare backed up into a tree and then he watched in horrow as the mare kicked out at the tree, soon enough the tree had it clutches on the mare's hoof. He slowly dismounted his horse as he saw that every attempt the mare made to free herself was a failed attempt. Jason guessed it was up to him to free the mare, without getting hurt in the process. "Stay here Cal," he said quietly to his gelding as he walked away from him, slowly approaching the painted mare. He didn't want to scare her anymore than what she was already. He stood a few feet away from her talking to her in soft words "Easy girl, I just want to get your hoof out of that mean old tree" Jason really didn't feel like getting kicked today. Oh man.....

The painted mare's expression grew crazed as the human grew closer. She threw back her head, a whinny ripping through her once more. She struggled with her hoof once more, failing miserable. She did not give up though, her brute force thrown into her effort to free herself. Instead of becoming free, her hoof seemed to dig further into the tree. Her black oracles rolled back into her head again, a distressed snort leaving her. She felt the bark dig into her skin, cutting the thick material and then feel the warm, scarlet liquid run teasingly down her leg. Her sides heaved with a sharp intake of breath, she did not call out in pain. Pain didn't affect her like fear did. She was much more happy to be hurt than have terror strike her skinny bodice. The mare was extremely skinny, her spine slightly visible, her ribs clearly shown. Her anxiety caused her to move along quickly, not pause long enough to eat. Her haunted orbs swiveled toward the human, her nares flared at him. She darted out her defined dome, baring her ivories at him. She went to nip at his arm, but could not quite reach. She threw up her neck in frustration, pulling once more at her firmly lodged hoof in the gripping trap that encased it. She winced at the sharp pain that smacked into her, but once again didn't call out. She just wanted to be free. Her expression turned pleading as she looked at the human male. If she could get him to dislodge her leg, she could flee and once again be away from humans. She blew a warm gust of air from her nostrils in the form of a snort. She looked to the humans companion. Get him to free me! Then I can go! she called to the other equine. Her vocals were hostile to the gelding, she didn't get why he would allow a human to sit on his back and kick at his sides for pleasure. Her audits flickered in agitation and she called to the gelding again. Come on, please? her oracles filled with fear again at the prospect of the humans hands upon her.

Jason stared at the mare in horror, he didn't know how he could help her if she was so vicious about anyone trying to help her. He took a step back as the mare lashed out towards him with her teeth, this was going to be a hard mission for Jason to accomplish, that was clear.
The brown gelding raised his head as the mare lashed out towards his owner, he stomped his hoof and snorted loudly, almost impatiently Why do you fear the help of this human so? The gelding threw up his head as he gazed in the mare's direction. My human has no intentions of capturing you, for why would he want to befriend something that would cause harm to him? He is trying to set you free, so calm yourself and be patient The gelding watched the on going scene, he was much older than the young feral mare, and he hoped his words got to her.
Jason looked over his shoulder as he heard the commotion that the gelding was having, Cal had never threw such a fit before, what had irritated him? Jason didn't really have time to attend to Cal, the gelding wasn't hurt, right now setting the wild mare free was Jason's main priority, but he didn't want to get bitten in the process of trying to help her. He talked in a low soothing voice once again "Easy girl, I want to help" He held out his hand slowly as he took a step forward, hoping, praying that the mare would not lash out onto his hand. He trembled slightly but he quickly banished the fear away.

Fire blazed up in the youngsters oracles as the older gelding spoke. Because I've been through hell and back because of these damn humans. she almost snarled at him. Her vocals rang out with such force, it sent shivers along her own spine. Her dome tossed in anger, ignoring the sharp pains that shot through her hind leg. You see these scars? she asked the gelding, turning her muscled neck to indicate to her marred shoulder. They were caused by your precious humans, as were all the other that cover me. she growled at him. You know why I'm so skinny? her words were full of venom. Because HUMANS would starve me for a week and then give me so little food, just enough to survive. she called out in frustration. And you wonder why I don't want his hands on me? Not all of us get the cushy little lifestyle you have had, got, what ever. We don't get to be spoiled, groomed, fed regularly. she spat. I may be young, but I can tell you, I've been through a whole lot more than you! she screeched at him.
Her focus went back to the human as she addressed the gelding of his last words. Story of my life. she muttered quietly before lifting her vocals to ring out to him. How can I be patient when any second he could rasp a whip over my body, adding to the already nearly full canvas of scars? How can I relax? I haven't been able to relax since I was a filly. her vocals were matter of fact now. She felt defeated. All she wanted to do was leave and hide from reality for a few hours. Her dome dropped heavily, a worn out snort left her. Her barely covered rib cage heaved with a deep sigh. She pulled at her hind leg feebly, her last attempt of trying to get free. It was useless. She turned her head from the human and equine, ignoring them completely. She would wait for the human to free her, but, if he hurt her there was no guarantee that she wouldn't strike out. If horses could cry, thats exactly what she would be doing at that moment.

The gelding looked at the mare, he wasn't at all affected by the harsh tone in her voice. Young mare, of course I have not been through what you have he snorted quietly What lies in the past, stays in the past. Yes, I may lead a much different life then you walk now, but I assure you with all of my heart, that this human that is near you will not harm you He flicked his ears slightly, the mare's harsh tone really didn't bother him. He was too old to fight anybody, let alone this feral mare. He snorted again his brown eyes staring at the mare This human will set you free, I assure you. Young mare! Look into his eyes, can you not see what he is trying to do? Can you see malice in his eyes? Can you?
Jason noticed that their was alot of commotion between his gelding and the feral mare but he wanted to save the mare now before things got more out of hand. He managed to get closer to the tree and he watched the mare carefully, hoping that he would have enough time to release the mare's hoof from the tree before she managed to lash out at him. He acknowledged the situation for a few quick moments, one quick tug should get the mare's hoof out of the tree. He approached the mare's leg and rested his hand on the painted mare's leg, attempting to pull the horse's hoof out
The dark brown gelding watched the scene carefully for a few more moments, he wasn't going to move, he was just going to watch. But there was a tug on the old gelding's heart as he watched his owner place his hand upon the feral mare's leg. Do not lash out young mare! nickered Cal loudly

The painted mare rolled her black oracles and ignored the geldings responses to her words. She kept her head away from them, she was not going to look at them. Her frame froze then, she felt a hand press against her legs. Her orbs widened, panic automatically flashing in her mind. Her breathing became deep and slightly unsteady. Pressure was applied and her pillar was tugged. Pain assaulted her violently, she could not suppress a shrieking whinny. No! It hurts too much! she called out, her lyrics strained. She looked around desperately, her fore hoof pawing at the ground in frustration. She swung her dome around, going to nip at the human but stopped herself. She knew that it would not solve anything. Her hoof had been dislodged just slightly, but it seemed enough. She pulled at her hind leg, feeling it loosen substantially. One more tug! she muttered, she couldn't hold back the slight excitement that slipped into her vocals. She pulled once more violently, feeling her hoof pull from the gripping trap the tree had created.
She took a step forward, calling out in agony. She could not place weight upon her hind leg, it had been cut deeper than expected and also had twisted into an uncomfortable angle. She backed up, trying to keep weight from her hind and turned herself. She threw herself into an uneasy trot, gasping in pain as she did so. She just wanted to get away. She forced herself to throw the pain into the back of her mind and increased to an agonizing canter. The mare gritted her strong jaws, only getting so far down the trail until she had to stop. She limped pitifully down the trail and then pulling to a complete halt. She couldn't go any further, she would end up breaking her leg, then she would be completely useless. She looked over her shoulder, seeing she had distanced herself quite a way from the human and the gelding. But, they were still in view and it made her uncomfortable.
She urged herself to move on again, each step causing a convulsion of torture afflicting her frame. She lamely carried on before dropping heavily onto her stomach, it was making the wound worse by walking on it. She was now rendered helpless, until her leg healed, how would she escape? How could she move to grazing place to grazing place? Shelter? Water? She was hopeless. The mare called out feebly, giving up on her break for freedom. She didn't look back though, she wouldn't give the human the satisfaction of knowing she needed his help.

Jason was excited as he saw the mare pull herself free until he realized that the painted mare was injured. How was he going to help her? He watched as the mare hurried away down the path only to collapse moments later when she was a little ways away. Jason thought hard about what he should do next but soon enough he made up his mind and clucked to Cal. The brown gelding trotted over to Jason's side and as Jason walked down the path, Cal was right behind him.
Cal looked at the mare but as he came to a halt behind Jason when he stopped a few feet away from the mare, his gaze was else where, he had no words to say to the mare, for he knew she would overlook his advice.
Jason observed the situation and he thought for a moment and then an idea came to him, but he didn't know if it would work at all. He walked over to Cal and rummaged around in the saddle bag attached to the saddle. There has to be something in here said Jason quietly until he finally found the items he was looking for. Unfortunately, he was in lack of supplies but he managed to find a handful of hay and a leg wraps. He didn't know how the feral mare would take to him trying to help her but he wanted to help the mare, he didn't want her to suffer out in the wild. He turned around, hay in hand and approached the mare "Listen girl, I know you don't understand me, but I want to help" said Jason in a calming tone as he slowly reached the hay towards the mare hoping she would take it. He wanted to get a good look at her injured leg, there really wasn't much he could do out here in the wilderness. And if he didn't give help to the mare she would probably suffer and then slowly die.
Cal snorted as he watched Jason attempt to help the feral mare, he thought that maybe his owner was trying to help a false cause. Even the old gelding could see that the mare did not want any help, but of course Cal also knew that Jason would not let the horse suffer. Cal exhaled in a deep breath, his patience was dwindling.

Her muzzle pressed into the soft ground that she lay upon, her dark orbs broken. She heard them approaching again, her instinct kicking in immediately. She lifted her head and attempted the struggle to stand. She failed, dropping back heavily onto her stomach. Her hoof pulled awkwardly beneath her and she gave a shriek of pain. She tugged her leg from beneath her, her breathing heavy and un even. Her struggling ceased when she picked up the scent of something she had not tasted for years. Her dark orbs swiveled toward the human, her orbs locking upon the harsh hay. She forced herself not to reach out to get the feed. Her attention shifted again, she was determined to stand.
Her forelegs pushed out ahead of her, raising her fore body so that it looked like she was sitting. She winced and forced her good hind leg to shove her upward. Her hurt leg automatically followed but she gritted her ivories until she was up. She kept her cut leg suspended in the air ever so slightly, no pressure at all upon it. She knew she could not move a step now, but she was proud of herself for standing. She looked around, unsure of what to do next. She could try and hobble away, but she knew it would be useless. She looked at the human, still not seeing the kind expression upon his face. All she felt was fear as she looked at him, it sent a convulsion of shivers along her spine.
Fury leaked through her torturers soulless orbs. His hands clenched and unclenched as he approached her. She threw herself into a canter, knowing it was useless as all she could do was run and run in circles. The round pen seemed to enclose upon her, pushing her closer and closer to agony. CRACK! the whip connected brutally across her rump. She screamed out in surprise and pain. She had not expected it, not just yet. She threw out her hind legs, kicking out at the unsettled atmosphere. Sweat, mixing with the blood from her newly marked wound, ran down her body, drenching her splattered pelt. Her black shone with the perspiration, enhancing the defined markings. CRACK! This time it hit her shoulder, again she had not seen the onslaught of violence. NO, PLEASE! Stop it! she called out, knowing the human could not understand her. She shot out her leg, trying to connect with her capturers hip. She missed, he did not. The rope was thrown out and wrapped around her leg. He pulled at his violently, she fell hard to the ground. She was lucky to not have broken the pillar. She gave a painful gasp, knowing one of her ribs had cracked. The human gave a dark chuckle. That's what you get for disobeying me, mare. His vocals filled with venom, he cracked the whip across her exposed stomach. She shrieked in pain and gasped when another assault hit her sides. She tried to get up, regain some dignity for herself. Oh no you don't! He shouted at her, rasping the whip over her neck. She did not call out in pain, her maw opened and closed. She was silent now. He came over to inspect her wounds. He watched for a good ten minutes, watched the blood trickle slowly down her marred pelt. He seemed to get a sick sense of joy out of it. Up mare. He ordered, his vocals quiet but forceful. She struggled to her feet, hobbling along weakly behind him. She was thrown back into her stall, greeted by the soft comforts from her ordeal. The other two who would be next to be served their 'punishment' new exactly what had happened, it happened daily.
She shook herself from the memory, her black orbs showing fear again. It was pitiful. She sidestepped away from the human, ignoring the pain. She had just relived what a human could do, she didn't want it to happen again. Her maw parted, she reached out to nip at him again. Self defense, it was nothing else. She was just acting out of self defense.

The brown gelding watched the mare carefully for a few more long moments and he watched his owner innocently try to offer the mare food, but to no avail. The gelding finally gave up the nice guy act when he noticed the mare try to nip at his owner once more. The old gelding walked a few steps foward and glared at the mare, but there was no malice in the gelding's eyes, only traces of worry for both his owner and the mare Mare! If you value what you consider your life, do not attack this human! I will assure you once more, this human has no reason to hurt you and he shall not! He will cure you of what ails you and then we will leave you be! Trust me! There was a pain tugging at the gelding's heart, he did not want his owner to get hurt and he did not want the mare to suffer either. Even though the mare dislike humans, could she not accept the help of one human who's heart was innocent and clearly not soaked in malice?
Jason jumped back as the mare attempted to sink her teeth in him once more. He gazed at the mare, he was at a lost. He had no idea how he was going to help the mare, he realized that Cal had took a few steps closer to his side, he could tell that the gelding was agitated. He turned around and rested his hand on the brown gelding's dark forehead. He just did not know what to do
The gelding lowered his head as he felt the soft hand of his owner upon his broad face. He could sense that his owner had given up, the gelding snorted and rested his gaze on the mare again. Please young mare, let us help you

She listened to the geldings words and remained stubborn briefly. She did not look at him, nor the human, but knew the bays reasoning was right. Okay, okay. But, he has to be quick. she told him quietly. She turned her hind leg toward him, then realized that the human would think she was going to kick him and turned again. She winced as the pain shot through her and whinnied softly. She backed up a step, and then forward. Her pelt had grown a soft shine of sweat which she had not realized. Her frame then shivered, realizing that she was cold. Her orbs widened in surprise, and she snorted in agitation. She didn't get why she was sweating, but was freezing.. Her frame was shaking violently, she couldn't control herself. What's going on? Why is this happening? she turned, asking the gelding with fearful lyrics. She took a few steps toward the human, her hind leg enveloped in pain. She stretched out her muzzle to press it to his chest. She was asking for help, desperately. She had never experienced the things she was right now. She had no idea what was going on. What she did now was that she wanted it to stop.
Her thick neck, her flowing locks causing a gust of air to drown her. It felt amazing to her, and she did it again. She looked around desperately, she wanted water. She took a step to the left, toward the direction she heard water coming from. Again she winced at the agony. She forced herself to stop, she knew that the human could help her and the only one who could. Please, get him to hurry up. But, don't let him hurt me. she pleaded with the older gelding. Her dark oracles were full of genuine fear. She looked to the human then, seeing that the gelding had been right. The human really did seem kind and only wanted to help her. She felt regret soar through her bodice.

The gelding took a few steps and snorted again as if he was grateful to the mare and he then settled his gaze on his human, watching everything that the young man was doing, he knew the human would not bring harm to the feral mare, but the gelding did not trust the mare as much as he trusted his owner. He flicked his ears as Jason reached into the saddle bag again pulling out medical wraps. The gelding lifted his gaze and let it fall on the painted mare. What will you do? he snorted half to himself.
Jason did not understand why the mare had calmed down all of a sudden and had reached her muzzle, almost touching his chest. He thought that maybe the mare was in a shock of some sort, Jason mentally panicked, if the mare was in shock he did not know how to cure it. He glanced warily at the mare, he didn't want her to suffer, he wanted to help her, honestly he did. All he had with him was couple of vet wraps, he knew that could possibly numb the pain in her leg, but that was all it could do. He reached his hand out to the mare "I will never hurt you wild one" he said calmly Cal glanced over at Jason as he tried to understand what the human said then he shifted his gaze back to the mare. He held up the medical wraps for the mare to see if she wanted to see them at all. He then gulped nervously as he moved towards the mare's hindlegs. If she decided to attack him, it would be all over for him, he wouldn't even have a chance. He glanced at the scars that littered the mare's sides, wondering what had caused the scars that was now a part of the mare
Cal nickered to the mare once more He is feeling sympathy for you as the gelding watched his human attempt to wrap the mare's wounded leg. The gelding did not understand human words but he understood their emotions well enough. He hoped that the feral mare could since the wariness and then the sympathy radiating off of the human. He glanced at Jason and flicked his ears, wondering what the mare would do as Jason finally got close enough to her leg to try and wrap it.
