I watched as people passed by, talking, milling about. Their distinct language was drowned out by the incessant meowing and barking that seemed to permeate through the area. What was this place I was brought to? I sat next to the cool bars, looking up, trying to silently plead with anyone that passed by me. Potential adopters looked at me, commented on how beautiful I really am before walking on. My breed, I guess, is known for being a hellish kind. I don't know how. I really am not. But I sat there, like a statue, waiting for someone to look deep enough and see an actual person who would get hypnotized in them and need me. But did I really want an owner? I walked stiffly to the back of the cage before sliding down with a sigh. Nobody loved me. Not the sweet little girl. Not the other people who I will never mention. What was wrong with me? Ahh, a pity party. Never will I pity myself. But now, as I thought about my past and looked at the present, I thought about the present. Now, every person who walked by looked like an assailant, ready to strike. My heart pounded faster and I didn't know what to do. I was trapped in this life and I didn't know how I could get out.

Celeste knew she was making a mistake. She didn't need a pet right now. Yet here she was at the animal rescue. Of course. She couldn't help but laugh at herself. She was a sucker for an animal in need, and no amount of ration was going to change that. She walked by the kennels, her heart going out to each dog that she passed. None of them seemed right, though. She wanted a dog that would of course be good with horses as well as one that was big enough to scare off intruders, but not overly aggressive. And she wanted a friend. Her old dog had been dead almost a year now, and finally she had realized that part of her grief was simply part of missing a canine presence in the house and around the barn. She paused at the door of a cage that held a Labrador mix inside. He wagged his tail when he saw her. "Here boy,!" She called. The dog went insane. He lunged agaist the bars, whining and begging for attention. "You poor thing," She murmured, scratching behind his ears. She was about to ask the rescue staff if she could see him when the dog next to him caught her eye. Her first thought was beautiful, but no. I don't need the kind of dog that'll run off all the time. She'd known a couple Huskies in her time, and both of them had had problems. A rescue husky was likely to have even more. But something about the dog's serious and slightly nervous gaze refused to let her go. She approached the bars, and murmured softly, "Hey sweetie, you're a pretty girl aren't you?" There was a name tag pinned to the door. "Nakita," she read aloud, "is that your name? Nakita?" She wanted to reach in and stroke the dog's beautiful silver fur, but she was still slightly nervous herself. A bite from a dog that size would hurt, and she looked a little scared, which was likely to make her more aggressive. She stood in front of the cage, deciding to let the dog make the first move.

(Sorry sky, trying to figure out if I like her in third person or in first)
A person. A foreboding presence around her. Ears went to the back of her skull as she watched her and listened to the crooning voice that filtered through the bars. Well, it seemed like nobody else was going to come up to her just yet, might as well give this lady what she wanted. She raised herself up, no she was not going to like the imbasil that she had to be neighbors with. She took a few hesitant steps near her. Did she really want to do this? She did not know. However, why not be brave and go up there. There were a set of steel bars between them to protect both of them. Although Kita knew why they were there. They were there so that the dogs could not get to the humans. But what about the humans getting to the dogs? There was no way to protect against that. A few more shaky steps were given, and finally she was there. Her tail was pretty much hidden, ears were still back as she looked at this human that stood there, spitting out words that she didn't know except her name. As she spoke it, her silver ears perked a little bit and her tail wagged feebly before she went back into her shell. She sat down just a couple inches from the bar, watching her, waiting for her to make her next move. The husky was ready to bolt to the back of the cage if necessary. It was a nice little hole in the wall that hid her from just about enough.

She really was a beautiful dog. Celeste wondered how she had ended up in the rescue. She behaved like an abuse victim. The cage was too dark for her to see if the husky had any physical scars. As the husky slowly approached the bars, Celeste found herself holding her breath. She exhaled lightly as she saw a small show of interest from the dog. The poor thing looked as if she thought Celeste would eat her. Slowly, very slowly she raised her hand palm down up to the bars, not trying to stick her fingers through them, but just offering Nakita a chance to sniff her. "I have a pretty big home," She murmured quietly, trying to lessen the tension that surrounded them. "I don't know how much room you like to run around in, but I think I would have enough. And of course you could sleep in the house. Or the stable, if you'd prefer. I do have horses, I hope you don't mind them. Right now most of my horses haven't arrived, so I just have my stallion. He likes dogs, though, so you wouldn't have to worry about him." Celeste realized that a couple of the people around her were giving her peculiar looks. She had never been able to figure out why some people thought talking to an animal was so bizzare. She'd always spoken to her animals. It was an unproven theory, but she'd always followed the line of thought that the more you speak to your animals, the more they learn to understand. She continued to talk softly to the husky, her hand resting against the bars of the cage.

Kita slowly craned her neck out toward the lady's hand, but she could not reach it. She took a small step before finally being able to get a whiff of her hand. She smelled like another animal to an extent. Now she was puzzled, unknown if this was a human or if this was an animal. Well, some of the humans she knew always had treats. She bumped her hand with her muzzle, but nothing fell out. Her ears perked up, and she relaxed a little bit, the curiosity of what this thing was making her wonder more than fear. An elderly lady walked up to Celeste, a warm smile on her face. Kita's really taken a liking to you. She's not one to warm up to other people very often. She handed Celeste a dog treat to give to her if she wanted as she watched the two interact. Kita looked over at the other lady. She knew her and understood that she was trying to get her a home. She saw her everyday and she was really very nice. She was the one that came with the food, and Kita loved food. She watched the passing of something between the two and she looked up with a pleading look in her eyes as if she had never been fed before. Down here, I'm down here. You know you want to give me whatever that is. I'll do the puppy eyes, nobody can resist those on this cute face. She gave off a small whine, her first sign that she actually knew how to speak, trying to bring attention back to herself.

Celeste smiled as Nakita bumped her hand. "Thanks," She murmured as the woman handed her a treat. "She does seem a little reserved. What's her story?" She heard a noise and shifted her gaze back to the dog. When she saw her face, she couldn't help but laugh. "Well, you certainly know how to get what you want." The husky's expression was absolutely adorable. Breaking the treat into two pieces, Celeste pinched one half between her fingers and stuck it through the bars. "Can she come out of the cage?" Celeste knew this was a half pointless question. The dog was going to be sitting shotgun in her truck on her way home tonight.
OOC: Ugh, sorry for the suckiness, I'm totally brain-dead at the moment.

(No problem)
She took the treat gently, not wanting to scare this person that she knew she had wrapped around one of her paws. She quickly ate it. The elderly lady smiled and nodded. She grabbed a temporary collar and leash and opened the cage. Kita came forward a couple steps before the lady was finally able to put the collar and she brought her out. At first, the silver-gray husky didn't know what to do. She really didn't want to leave her little cage, although she did not like it so much either. Finally, after much coaxing, she was out and she sat down right next to the entrance, ready to jump right back in at the first sign of danger. We got her from a puppy mill. As far as we know, she has never had any puppies and it doesn't seem like she was abused except malnourished. Although the place seemed to have scarred her emotionally. She looked up at Celeste, trying to woo her to take her home. Now. Not later. Now.

Once the lady had managed to coax the husky out of the cage, Celeste knelt down and gently stroked Kita behind her ears. "Good girl," She said. Outside of the cage, the dog really was beautiful. She held out the other half of the treat. Hearing the other womans words, she grimaced. "Puppy mills are the scourge of the earth." In high school she'd gone on a trip to one once. All the animals had already been confiscated by animal services, but the cages, and the refuse hadn't been removed. It had been awful. Celeste had felt as if she could hear the dogs whining and yelping from terror and untreated wounds. Hearing that Kita had once been part of a puppy mill only solidified her descision. She looked at Kita, "Well, what do you say? D'you want to come home with me?" She laughed at the look on her face. "I think you do," She turned to the woman,"I'd like to adopt her, today if possible." She had a sudden burst of her own anxiety. What if there was some rule? She felt as if she couldn't leave Kita here one more night. She was pretty sure that Kita felt the same way as well.

Kita looked up at her with those innocent blue eyes as she spoke and she quickly took the treat, her tail going at it as if it were her own wind mill. She heard something like excitement in her voice and she let out a bark, standing up and looking at Celeste as if she were something special. She started bouncing back and forth on her front paws, ready to go now. The elderly lady nodded and said, Follow me, I'll get you the paperwork for you to fill out. Kita can come too. She figured that the dog would be going home right away and there was no point in keeping her in the cage one second longer. She was glad she was getting a good home because she deserved it and there was so much life left in her. At the sound of her name she quickly started going toward the exit as if it was time for that. Instead, the elderly lady was going in the opposite direction, toward the office.
